Great Chlum

Great Chlum

The town is set around the Elbe River, nestled in volcanic hills and sandstone cliffs, occasionally running up to the peaks. These offer panoramas you won't find anywhere else. There is a wealth of sights to choose from. If you prefer the classic stone lookout towers, make sure you go to Velký Chlum.

A red marked hiking trail leads directly from the centre. From it you can see the landscape of the Bohemian Central Highlands, the Ore Mountains and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Only a few houses, a chapel and a 16-metre high stone tower at the highest point remain from the original settlement with several restaurants. There are 83 stairs leading to the top of the year-round accessible lookout tower and you can see it from two open floors. In the distance you can see Kletečná, Milešovka and Děčínský Sněžník, the largest table mountain in Bohemia. From a certain angle of the tower you can also observe the area of Bohemian Switzerland. You can reward yourself for the climb from the Elbe River to the top with a rest and build a fire on the fireplace right below the lookout tower. In the summer months, this place is perfect for romantic sunset watching over the town.
